Measurable Goals

An IEP must include a statement of measurable annual goals, including academic and functional goals.  Massachusetts Department of Education IEP Measurable Goals.

The term SMART IEPs describes IEPs that are specific, measurable, use action words, are realistic and relevant, and time-limited.

S    Specific – target areas of academic achievement and functional performance
M   Measurable – count or observe it
A    Use Action Words – e.g. “The child will be able to . . .”
R    Realistic and relevant – address the child’s unique needs
T    Time-limited – enable you to monitor progress at regular intervals

Goal component checklist

The goal should include:

  • the direction we want to go (increase or decrease)
  • the problem we are addressing
  • the present level
  • the amount of change, by the end of this IEP year
  • the methodology needed
  • as measured by (standardized test, teacher recorded trials or other measurable method)
